Obtaining a license to become a veterinary technician (vet tech) in Wisconsin is different in some respects from the process followed in many other states.
There are two routes to obtaining certification as a vet tech in Wisconsin. The first is to graduate from a 4 semester vet tech course from an approved training college or to have worked at least two years for a licensed veterinarian who is able to provide an affidavit that during that two year period “50% of applicant’s time has been spent in practical field experience and the remainder in laboratory work, office procedures, and technical training.”
Whether coming from the college route or the work experience route the applicant must have passed the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE).
In addition to passing the VTNE applicants for licensing must pass the Wisconsin Statutes and Rules exam which sets out the regulations regarding the legal practices of vet techs in Wisconsin.
In Wisconsin a license is obtained from the Department of Safety and Professional Services
There are 6 campuses in Wisconsin accredited by the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA) to provide approved training in veterinary technology. Five of these campuses are part of Globe University. The sixth college is the Madison Area Technical College.
Globe University, originally called Globe College was founded in 1885 in Minnesota, as an institution which provided technical training different from a conventional university. Since 2007 it has been known as Global University and has campuses in Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
All 5 of the Globe University campuses provide both a two year Associate Degree course in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology and a 4 year Bachelor of Science Degree in Veterinary Technology Management.
In the Associate degree, in addition to learning theoretical subjects such as biology, chemistry, mathematics, anatomy and physiology, practical study will take place in such topics as animal nursing care, anesthesiology, dentistry, drawing blood and other lab work. The course will also include an externship with a licensed vet so as to develop hands-on skills.
A Bachelor’s degree will include all that is covered in an Associate degree but will also cover more advanced topics such as: advanced anesthesia and dentistry, emergency and critical care, small animal behavior, equine care, laboratory animal management and integrative medicine. In addition training will cover office procedures including the use of veterinary software, and business management.
